Should Puppymills be Legal?

Should Puppymills be Legal?

Puppy mills are in business and going strong.

There is no end in sight.

Do you even know what a puppy mill is?  Do you even know what they do at a puppy mill?  These are questions so many people when asked cannot answer correctly.  Why is this?  I will tell you why.  It is because of our uneducated society and a common turn my head in the other direction.... if I do not look at it... it will go away...what I cannot see will not hurt me.... I would rather turn a blind eye and laaallaaaalaaaa it is not happening attitude.  Well folks, it is happening.  It is happening all over and it is so disgusting and inhumane that I cannot go a day without knowing deep in my heart what needs to be done.  The world we live in needs to be EDUCATED!  I understand there are a lot of things in this world that are horrific, and this is one of them that I feel extremely passionate about.  Really people, I cannot believe how any human being can look something in the eye like a little old momma who they have shoved in a little tiny cage to breed over and over again and not see her pain.  Do they see the pain?  Do you really think they look?  Or is it just a dollar sign, a thing, a possesion that brings money into their pockets at any cost.  What do these people think of themselves or others in this business?  How can they lay their heads down at night on a soft warm squishy pillow with a nice pillow cover that has been washed in Tide and rinsed with Downy Softener, pulling up their nice warm blankie in their comfy, maybe squeaky bed, while there are hundreds of dogs just yards from them in agony!!!  My goodness people.  Where is the compassion for a life?  Where is the heart that God has meant you to have, full of love and utter care for any being?  I feel that this topic needs to be discussed at FULL capacity.  This needs to STOP!

For those of you reading this article and asking yourself.... humm????.... what is a puppymill anyways... well, let me delight you with the lovely details of their fantasitc Bed and Breakfast Inn's.  Puppy mills hold anywhere from 100 to 1000 dogs at one time for nothing but breeding purposes.  They breed over and over again to anything that walks so that they can come up with some designer breed or maybe even a purebred puppy to deliver to your local petstore for pennies on the dollar. The dogs housed at these facilities are never given medical treatment.  They are never given the human interaction they so live for.  They are fed only enough to survive... if they are lucky.  Puppymills supplement their dogs on saw dust!  They more than likely have never been down on the ground in their whole life so they topple over when they attempt to walk for the very first time, or go the easy route and just lay there, too weak to even try.

Puppymills sell and supply to PET STORES!!!  Yes, the little nice pet store in your local mall on in the strip mall down the street where all the children walk home from school.  Children are able to see the cute little puppy faces looking up at them and telling them to run home and ask Mommy and Daddy for that cute little puppy in the window that has been shipped half way across the universe at an extremely dangerous age only to find themselves the "advertements" for puppy mills.

Do you know how much the pet store pays for a puppy?  Probably not!  You would be amazed!  The pet stores pay approximately 25-50 bucko-roos for that little, cute, begging-to-take-me-home thing!  Yes, you read that correctly!  Some may be a little more or a little less, but all in all you go right ahead and plop those glasses down on your eye balls and read that price tag on that puppy!  WHEW!  Now that is a good down payment on a house these days, or maybe well, a good 6-9 months of a car payment!  BUT... "Oh look at it...I can't leave it here... it is so sad that it is at the pet store!!  " Oh look, they offer financing".  How convienent! And they will give me a new puppy if it dies within a few days!!! OMG!  Truly, if you knew how much they paid for the puppy and then marked it up so astronomical, would you really still consider purchasing there?  Why?  You work hard to earn your money, and they are just stealing it right out of your pocket without a care in the world!  Educate yourselves as much as possible.  Pet store purchases are usually a "fly-by the seat of your pants" purchase... an "impulse buy".  If you only knew the pain and torture this puppy mill survivor has endevored just for the production for the unknowing public, would you think twice?  I mean really, just look at her.  Look again.  Look closely.  Let me ask you again.... would you think twice?

Supply and Demand people, Supply and Demand!  As long as the puppies keep making it out of those pet stores.. there will always be a need to re-stock them from Mommy's such as this!  If you STOP buying puppies from a pet store... there will be no way for their business to continue.  Supply and Demand.... repeat after me... Suppy and Demand.   You do have the control!  You do have the power to make this STOP!  Take the first step and educate your family and friends about puppy mills and pet stores. Know there are other options for bringing your new family member home, but this does not have to be one of them!

  • I would personally urge all readers to contact their legislators. Until we can get laws in place that remove household animals (dogs, cats, etc.) as 'livestock', we will continually be battling this fight. The laws and regulations over livestock are very different than domestic animals. States have very little recourse over puppy mills, because they have no legal leg to stand on. I also urge readers to logon and join the humane society of the united states www.hsus.org you can join their e-mail list and they will e-mail you with links everytime a house/senate bill is to be voted on surrounding animal rights (they also provide helpful links directly to your representative or congressman/woman)...so that you can be vocal in your support/concers of particular bills. First and foremost, PLEASE tell your friends and family, NOT to buy from a pet store. PLEASE don't take your children into a pet store at the mall to show them the 'cute' puppies, kittens. SUPPORT RESCUE.

  • As part of Arizona Beagle Rescue, I have to tell you that I had no idea how horrible these puppy mills are. I do have a close friend that lives in Pennyslyvania and she has verified that the puppy mills there are all over the place and the pups are in horrid conditions. Most of these puppy mills are run by the Amish people, and they do not take care of these animals at all. They treat them like they would chickens or livestock. Living in little chicken wire crates, no room to move, living in their own waste, and the breeding dogs are in great need of medical treatment. They are malnourished and literally dying and they are supposed to keep having more and more litters of puppies, til they are considered "unbreedable" and then either drowned or shot and put in trash cans at the puppy mill. We must go to our local government officials and get them to do something. Please ADOPT FROM RESCUES!!!!

  • Right on, Dawn! Having worked with the 28 beagles that were recently saved from a Missouri puppymill, I saw first-hand what these dogs go through! I was amazed to see dogs afraid of toys and people and food! I also watched them slowly learn to trust and get petted and play in the grass!!! Thank you to all the puppymill rescuers!!

  • Thank you Dawn for all this informative information. I am one of those people who didn't know what a puppy mill was. I had no idea that the pet stores get their pets from them either. Crazy!! Keep up the good work! :)

  • Awesome job Dawn!! I hope that together we can make a HUGE dent in the puppy mill industry! Let's shut them down!!!!!!!

  • Please support your local humane society or rescue group for a dog. DO NOT buy your dog from a pet store OR on the internet. I am personally spreading the word about how awful these puppy mills are. I have personally seen the result of some of these poor breeding dogs. No animal deserves that kind of treatment.

  • What can I say that has not already been said here, you all are such wonderful people for passing the word on about puppy mills. In my lifetime (almost 70) I have had 6 dogs all saved from shelters or a humane society given up or strayed from their previous homes. Our dogs have each been over a year old when we adopted them. Hooray for ALL you Grrrrreat people and Hooray for AZBR!! Sharon Johnson on behalf of our 2002 alumni beagle Jennie

  • Thank you Dawn for putting words to our thoughts. These abusive practices must stop now.

  • Dawn you are an Earth Angel among many who, are actually doing all that you can to love and take care of all these dogs that have gone through horrific abuse and to alert the public to these puppy mills, pet stores, etc. We need laws against this type of abuse and the people who are so ignorant to do this crimes against animals. I think anyone who is caught should have to be held responsible and being found guilty should be put in prison and it should be considered a felony and actually have to do time.

  • Dawn, thank you so much for your dedication and passion in trying to put an end to puppy mills. We support your efforts 100%!

  • Dawn, you and AZ Beagle Rescue are truly amazing! All of the rescued beagles caught my attention, but there was that one, frail sweet little princess. A precious, gentle, forgiving soul named Gala that brought the suffering of these poor dogs to the forefront of my mind. It just breaks my heart to wonder at the sadness that comprised Gala's life before you saved her. She had been unwillingly trapped in a horrendous place that cared only for the number of puppies she could produce for them. She literally produced litter upon litter, upon litter, upon litter, upon litter, upon litter, upon litter, upon litter, upon litter, upon litter, upon litter, upon litter, upon litter, upon litter, upon litter. It was estimated that she was pregnant 15 times! What an injustice! But now, Gala gets to spend the rest of her days in the company of someone that is interested only in her well-being and comfort. Thank you, Dawn, for sharing this special rescue with others! Hugs, Veronica

  • I had heard of puppy mills before but never really researched into what kind of places they really were until recently. I have a beautiful 1 year old beagle in my care now, Denver, who for the first time today I caught as I was peeking through the blinds playing with the other beagle that is with us and it honestly brought tears to my eyes. If he knew I was watching he would have stopped immediately and probably would have run to hide in a corner somewhere. Denver is the cutest boy ever and you just want to grab him and hold him but he is too scared of people for that to be possible and it breaks our hearts. Thank you for educating people about the horrific conditions that these dogs from mills are kept in. Short term we may not see much change but if we keep on doing it there will be some amazing long term effects.

  • Very powerful stuff! Thank you for once again bringing awareness about the horrors of puppy mills. I truly wonder if those that own puppy mills have a conscience or soul. There is no empathy nor compassion for a living, God created life from the people that have sentenced these poor, innocent, loving souls to death, disease, sickness. The "healthy" puppies that survive and can live some semblance of a normal life once out of the mill are very much the exception and not the rule! Dawn, you are truly an angel for those without a voice! God bless you! Your compassion and dedication are outstanding. I wish the people who aren't involved with AZBR or from out of state realize just how hard you and the other volunteers care and work towards the good of animals. I've been fortunate to know you and volunteer and over the year I've watched you pour your heart and soul into these precious pups and for that there will be many jewels in your well deserved crown :) Carol J.

  • I was fortunate to be involved in a recent rescue of 28 Beagles w/the 'amazing' Dawn Wilkinson and the AZBR team. These precious mothers, young males and pups experienced human touch (hugs/kisses), real food (w/o sawdust filler), a soft bed and a toy and grass under their feet for the first time in their lives. You wonder what they've gone through and what was going on in their heads? But maybe it's better we don't know and just be thankful that we were able to make a difference in their lives and they became an important part of ours. It's so important to educate the public not to buy puppies from pet stores and to stop the demand by ending the supply. Every time a mill puppy is produced or purchased, a shelter dog looses his/her chance of finding a permanent home.

  • Dawn, I commend you for what you are doing, it is all about the education and legislation, even if its just one person at a time...Im right there at the front line of this issue with you and many others, these dogs have a voice with us and we need to scream it so they hear us all loud and clear in Washington...KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK

  • Way to go Dawn and AZBR!!!! We need to keep educating, educating, educating! That's the only way to spread the word! We need to save Beagles and ALL dogs from this horrifying way of life! Isnt' it amazing that Europe doesn't allow this, has laws against it but we don't??? We need to take a cue from them!

  • Dawn, you are an incredible person. Thank you for writing such an informative article. This information should be sent to every home in America so that this horrible business can be stopped. As a foster for one of the recent puppy mill dogs with AZBR, I can say with my whole heart that they are the sweetest, kindest animals one will ever know. It is incredible how much love they can give after what they have been through! Dawn, you are an angel. HUGS! Beth

  • All dogs and animals deserve better! There are so many points that Dawn makes that need to be addressed in every home throughout the country. Dawn speaks with me about education being the key. Right on target. Without the world knowing, there is no reason for them to care. I know Dawn has many "beagle" contacts and she will be able to point you in the right direction if you want or have to have a puppy. Research... know who is behind your puppies breeding on a personal level. Better yet, go and get a dog that needs a home from the shelter, humane society or a rescue group.

  • No. This is NOT okay with me. Look at that poor dog. I don't understand. Why do we let this go on. Please help Dawn in making this effort a worth while one. Help her get the point across, if not for her, for all these suffering animals. It is wrong. It is so disgusting. Please forward this to everyone so that they too can sign and comment. This article NEEDS TO BE NOTICED, HEARD AND LISTENED TO... ACTION NEEDS TO HAPPEN NOW!!!

  • Thank you for putting into words what I am sure many of us are feeling! This article needs to be read by everyone in order to promote understanding of this situation. My daughter is actively involved with AZBR, and while my husband and I live out of state, we are strong supporters of AZBR and its mission. We have a rescued beagle companion in our lives, as does our daughter, and he brings such joy and happiness to us that I cannot imagine life without him. It is my hope and prayer that some day all animals will be able to live the lives they should in a very special forever home. We will be doing our best to educate family and friends in Santa Fe, New Mexico to this situation and encouraging them to get involved and make a difference. AZBR, its volunteers, supporters and its beagles are in our prayers. Together we can work to make a difference!

  • Puppy mills should definitely be illegal. I can not believe with all the negative publicity and heart breaking news stories that people still purchase puppies from pet stores. I am sure if they knew what really went on to "make" this puppy, they would be appalled. Educating the public is the key. We need to garner support and bring it to the legislators. Banning international shipments of puppies to the US was in the recently passed Farm Bill until it got nixed. Congress needs to know that the public does not support puppy mills.
    By meow1229meow on September 25, 2008 16:12

  • AZBR & all the other rescues that save mill dogs are my heroes! The puppy mill industry is horrific. Yes, it's easier to turn our heads & say it's not my problem or it's too painful to know the truth, but everyone please do your part to support shelters and rescues. Everyone can help to stop these heartless, disgusting people from making money off these innocent dogs.

  • Thank you for your efforts in educating us about the puppy mills. Until recently, I did not realize many of the rescue groups existed, let alone the wonderful and important work they do. I have since joined AZBR and have one of the beautiful former mommy puppies who is learning to eat without fear, sleep on her pink bed and get loving from her family. What an amazing dog. I'm lucky to be part of her life and recovery.

  • It's all about greed and money. This, unfortunately, is the permeating tone with businesses where animals are involved. Education, exposing these mills on TV, radio, etc., federal/state legislation that makes it more difficult for these mills to operate under the "status quo", and protesting pet stores - all of these methods must be continued in order to win the fight. Sans any real legislation to put them out of business, the puppy mill industry needs to be "hit" where it will hurt the most - their pocketbook. We cannot give up the fight.. Thank you for an article that helps in that fight..
By Maurna Winterer on September 25, 2008 20:25

  • Dawn, I am with you all the way. This is somthing that we MUST educate people on. We are their voice and dogs where not put on this earth to suffer at the hands of greedy humans. For that fact no animal should suffer. I will forward your article this is definately a subject near and dear to my heart too!!!

  • All of the comments that have been posted thus far have been very awesome! I want everyone to know that this topic needs to be world-wide and spread to the ends of the universe! Who are we if we cannot treat mans best friend like we too want to be treated. There are so many amazing animals that enrich our lives on a minute basis. They are the world for those who are not able or do not want to have children of their own.... they are our children. Please continue to spread the word as we have not yet reached the possible heights of awareness!!!!!! Dawn~
